Prochorus
is based in the Kayamandi Township just outside Stellenbosch in South Africa. This location represents the apartheid type social engineering, with the so-called 'Coloured' community of Cloetesville, across the road, acting as a buffer to the White centrally located population group of Stellenbosch. More than 70% of the population in Kayamandi live in squatter camps with out a proper infrastructure. In these camps there is a very high rate of malnutrition, poverty and HIV and Aids and also crime. The literacy-rate is also very low. On the other hand Kayamandi is still rich with Xhosa culture [the indigenous culture] which is based on "UBUNTU" meaning HUMANITY. Through various community projects that have shown themselves to be beneficiary and successful, Prochorus has made a significant contribution to the community. We, through these projects, have empowered, trained and developed skills on various levels from crafts to Computer skills and even lateral thinking through our chess program. One notable project is the "Kayamandi Beads Project". The Kayamandi Beads project is a job creation project for women and single mothers in the township and was started in February 2000 as part of our vision to impact our community where the needs are the greatest. We have a vision to not only make a difference but to make it different. Some of the biggest challenges we face are poverty, unemployment and especially in Kayamandi the people struggle with a lack of hope. With the help of others like yourself, we are already making a difference and we are on our way to making it different.
Up until today we have trained 7 ladies and employed 5 of them fulltime. By the end of this year we hope to have 10 ladies employed fulltime and we are working towards employing 50 ladies. But it does not end there. Bead making is not the only craft the people of Kayamandi can produce. We are currently investigating the possibilities of setting up other crafts projects and of co-operating with local craftsmen.
